Description

The canoe trip from Carsac to La Roque-Gageac is one of the most spectacular routes in the Dordogne Valley. Approximately 16 km long, it combines magnificent landscapes, charming villages and medieval heritage in the heart of the Périgord Noir. Starting from Carsac-Aillac, the descent begins on a calm and green stretch of the Dordogne, perfectly suited to families and beginners. From the very first paddle strokes, you can enjoy sweeping panoramas of the valley, meadows, and wooded banks typical of the region.

Montfort Castle, an iconic view

As you continue your descent, you pass alongside the famous Montfort castle, an impressive medieval fortress perched on a rocky spur overlooking a spectacular bend in the Dordogne river. From the canoe, the view of the castle, the village clinging to the cliff, and the surrounding cliffs offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the valley. It's an ideal spot to take a break, snap some photos, and enjoy the tranquility of the river.

Further on, the fortified town of Domme comes into view, perched high above the valley from its rocky promontory. This listed village, surrounded by ramparts, is one of the iconic sites of the Périgord Noir. From the river, you enjoy a unique view of this medieval village, often considered one of the most beautiful in France.

The cliffs of Pendoilles and wild landscapes

The Pendoilles area is distinguished by its vertical cliffs plunging into the Dordogne and its play of light on the rock throughout the day. This section enhances the wild and spectacular character of the route while remaining accessible. The pebble beaches and small coves invite swimming and relaxing breaks.

La Roque-Gageac, an unforgettable finale

The descent ends beautifully with the crossing of La Roque-Gageac, classified among the most beautiful villages in France. Nestled at the foot of a golden cliff, the village reveals its ochre stone houses, slate roofs, and exotic gardens. From the canoe, you can enjoy an exceptional view of this iconic Dordogne landscape.

Itinerary

Step 1 - Departure from Carsac-Aillac
Head directly to our Carsac Canoe Leisure Centre, just a 10-minute drive from Sarlat-La-Canéda. Hop aboard one of our canoes or kayaks and set off for a descent into the heart of the Dordogne Valley.
Step 2 - First twists and turns with the Château de Montfort
You will begin your journey facing the cliffs of Carsac before sailing towards the Cingle de Monfort, which overlooks the Dordogne River from a height of several dozen meters. A 12th-century historical monument, this building, located in the commune of Vitrac, will amaze you with its beauty and architectural style. A swimming beach on the left bank, opposite the castle, will be accessible so you can fully enjoy the view.
Step 3 - Towards the stone bridge of Vitrac and its old port
Continue your descent and you will see on your left the « Caudon rock », referring to the imposing limestone cliff and its natural setting. A swimming beach will be on your right. Then you will navigate, passing under the first bridge of your route.
Step 4 -The fortified town of Domme
Paddling beneath the town of Domme, you’ll enjoy a superb view of the perched bastide town before continuing along the valley towards Cénac, at the foot of the hills and charming villages. You’ll also pass under the second bridge of your route.
Step 5 - The village of La Roque-Gageac and its Château de la Malartrie
Shortly after, you can admire the « Pendoilles », a magical limestone cliff, before arriving at La Roque-Gageac. From your canoe or kayak on the Dordogne River, this magnificent troglodytic village, listed among the most beautiful in France, reveals its golden color, its houses clinging to the rock face, and its exceptional natural setting.

You will be able to admire and contemplate this heritage while enjoying a large beach on the left bank with an exceptional view of the village but also of the Château de la Malartrie, and its design of 3 very distinct towers which represent the architecture of the castles in the surrounding area. You will paddle a few dozen meters to get out of the village and then your stop will be on your right.
Step 6 - Returning to base
Depending on the return shuttle schedule chosen at the time of departure, our team will take care of the equipment and you can enjoy the return journey on board our buses.
