Departures are possible continuously between 9:30 am and 12:00 pm. Please arrive 20 minutes before your chosen time.

Description

The canoe trip from Carsac to Beynac is one of the most comprehensive routes in the Dordogne Valley. Over approximately 21 km, it offers a total immersion in the heart of the Périgord Noir, between magnificent landscapes, medieval villages and iconic castles. Starting from Carsac-Aillac, the descent begins gently on a calm and accessible stretch of the Dordogne River, bordered by meadows, pebble beaches, and wooded banks. This initial section allows you to fully enjoy nature while getting your bearings.

Le château de Montfort et la bastide de Domme

As you continue downstream, you pass the majestic Château de Montfort, perched on its rocky spur overlooking a wide bend in the Dordogne River. From the river, the view of the castle and the village clinging to the cliff is one of the quintessential images of the Périgord Noir. A little further on, the fortified town of Domme appears perched high above, overlooking the entire valley. This listed medieval village offers a remarkable panorama and is an iconic landmark along the route.

Currently, and until May 15, 2026 inclusive, rehabilitation and safety work is being carried out by the Dordogne Department on the section from Castelnaud to Pont du Pech. As a result, we do not have access to our Beynac bus stop, and we must therefore close this section of the route until the prefectural order is lifted.

Cliffs and wild landscapes of the Pendoilles

The Pendoilles area marks a transition to wilder landscapes. The high cliffs plunge down to the river and offer spectacular plays of light throughout the day. The meanders alternate between shaded areas, pebble beaches and small coves ideal for a swimming break or a picnic in the heart of nature.

La Roque-Gageac, an emblematic village

The descent continues with the crossing of La Roque-Gageac, classified among the most beautiful villages in France. Nestled at the foot of a golden cliff, the village reveals its ochre stone houses, its slate roofs and its exotic gardens. From the canoe, the view is exceptional and allows you to discover this iconic site from a unique perspective.

Marqueyssac, Castelnaud and the corridor of castles

Downstream, you'll sail beneath the famous Marqueyssac Gardens, clinging to the cliffs, before catching sight of the imposing medieval fortress of Castelnaud. Opposite it, on the other bank, stands the Château de Fayrac, forming a remarkable ensemble that perfectly illustrates the rich heritage of the Dordogne.

A spectacular arrival in Beynac

The descent ends opposite Beynac Castle, one of the most impressive in the valley. Perched on its rocky promontory, it overlooks the village and the Dordogne River, offering a spectacular finale to this day of canoeing. This route is ideal for those who wish to discover in a single descent the most beautiful landscapes and iconic sites of the Dordogne.

Itinerary

Step 1 - Departure from Carsac-Aillac
Head directly to our Carsac Canoe Leisure Centre, just a 10-minute drive from Sarlat-La-Canéda. Hop aboard one of our canoes or kayaks and set off for a descent into the heart of the Dordogne Valley.
Step 2 - First twists and turns with the Château de Montfort
You will begin your journey facing the cliffs of Carsac before sailing towards the Cingle de Monfort, which overlooks the Dordogne River from a height of several dozen meters. A 12th-century historical monument, this building, located in the commune of Vitrac, will amaze you with its beauty and architectural style. A swimming beach on the left bank, opposite the castle, will be accessible so you can fully enjoy the view.
Step 3 - Vitrac then the fortified town of Domme
Continue your descent and you will see on your left the « Caudon rock », referring to the imposing limestone cliff and its natural setting.
A swimming beach will be on your right. Then you will sail past the first bridge of your route.
Step 4 -The fortified town of Domme
Paddling beneath the town of Domme, you’ll enjoy a superb view of the perched bastide town before continuing along the valley towards Cénac, at the foot of the hills and charming villages. You’ll also pass under the second bridge of your route.
Step 5 - The village of La Roque-Gageac and its Château de la Malartrie
Shortly after, you can admire the « Pendoilles », a magical limestone cliff, before arriving at La Roque-Gageac. On the Dordogne River, from your canoe or kayak, this magnificent troglodytic village, listed among the most beautiful in France, reveals its golden color, its houses clinging to the rock face, and its exceptional natural setting.

You will be able to admire and contemplate this heritage while enjoying a large beach on the left bank with an exceptional view of the village but also of the Château de la Malartrie, and its design of 3 very distinct towers which represent the architecture of the castles in the surrounding area.
Step 6 - Passing at the foot of Castelnaud
Your canoe and kayak trip will continue towards the medieval Château de Castelnaud and its catapults, visible from the river. Paddle at your own pace and admire this historical gem. You will pass under the third bridge of your journey.
Step 7 - Arriving opposite Beynac Castle
From your canoes, you’ll see the fourth bridge of your route in the distance, and then, after paddling for a few more moments, the Château de Beynac perched majestically on its rocky outcrop, overlooking the entire Dordogne Valley. Hidden among the trees on your left, you’ll also glimpse the Château de Fayrac and its distinctive architecture. You’ll pass under the fourth and final bridge, and your stop will be just beyond on the right bank.
Step 8 - Back to basics
Depending on the return shuttle schedule chosen at the time of departure, our team will take care of the equipment and you can enjoy the return journey on board our buses.

No. The Carsac → Beynac descent remains accessible to beginners. The Dordogne is a calm river and this 21 km stretch presents no particular difficulty.

However, it is a longer descent. Before departure, our team will explain the basics of navigation and safety instructions to ensure you fully enjoy your outing.

The descent is approximately 21 km, which is on average 4 hours of navigation (excluding breaks).

You can plan for half a day, or even a full day if you want to take the time to stop for swimming, picnics or photos.

Yes, the route remains accessible, but it is longer than the other descents.

It is therefore recommended for children who are comfortable in the water and able to remain active for several hours. Children can generally participate from the age of 5, accompanied by an adult.

Yes, there are many pebble beaches and calm areas where you can take swimming breaks along the way.

The Dordogne is ideal for alternating between boating, relaxation and family time.

The Carsac → Beynac route is one of the richest in heritage in the Dordogne. You will notably be able to discover:

Booking is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended in high season (July and August). Booking in advance allows you to guarantee your place and choose the departure time that suits you.

After your arrival in Beynac, a shuttle will take you back to the starting base in Carsac.

The schedule will be provided to you before departure so that your day can proceed smoothly.

We advise you to bring:

  • a swimsuit
  • closed shoes for water
  • sunscreen
  • a cap or a hat
  • water

A waterproof container is provided to protect your belongings during the descent.

Yes. We provide a waterproof container in which you can store your phone, keys or camera to protect them from water.

In case of adverse weather conditions or excessively high water levels, the descent may be postponed or refunded.

Yes, it is perfectly possible to go canoeing in the Dordogne without experience.
